Sheepskin

Sheepskin from Parikkala
In order for us at Lovia to be able to make durable bags for their new owners, the material used must be of good quality. One of our material partners is the Kalliomäki farm in Parikkala, which dates back to 1739. The first sheep moved to the farm in 1996, after which the farm switched from industrial practices to organic production. At the Kalliomäki farm, the sheep are allowed to roam freely as they please and they only eat vegetation from their own farm, such as organic oats, broad beans and hay. Sheep are raised for their wool and meat. We use the leather hides left over from food production as the material for our bags.

Sustainable material from an organic farm
How does sheepskin from Parikkala end up as the material for Lovia bags? We want to open up the backgrounds of the materials we use as transparently as possible, so that as the user of the bag, you can get as much information as possible about the bag's origin and production methods.
The sheepskin used in Lovia bags comes from sheep raised on the Kalliomäki farm in Parikkala. From there, the hides travel to the Kruunupyyy factory in Ahlskog, where they are tanned, meaning they are treated to make them more durable. From there, the hides ultimately end up in Helsinki, where the leather is used as material for Lovia's designer bags.
Sheepskin is a very soft, durable and lightweight material. However, the further processing of sheepskin from food production surplus into leather products is a relatively small and rare industry in Finland.
