Collaboration to reuse textile waste

Isku is one of our partners with whom we give new life to surplus material. Growing from a small workshop to a modern factory, Isku has been manufacturing furniture in its hometown of Lahti since 1928. Responsibility is evident in everything Isku does, from raw materials to design and production to finished furniture. A new use for waste began to emerge when the upholstery waste from Isku's sofas was put to good use. Previously, only small amounts of surplus material had been used, but most of the good quality material still ended up in the trash. Now, surplus material from Isku's furniture is collected and transformed into Lovia bags.

From furniture textiles to durable treasures

How are furniture upholstery materials and designer bags related? We want to reveal the story behind our products as transparently as possible, so that you can get a true understanding of what happens to the material before it ends up in the form of a concrete product for you to use.

We have previously used Isku leather sofa cutting waste as material for our bags, but now we also have access to textile used in furniture upholstery. We collect Isku textile that can no longer be used in furniture upholstery due to its small size. Instead of ending up in waste, the textile gets a new life as Lovia treasures, such as VERSO cosmetic bags. The textile used in furniture is designed to withstand wear and tear and time, so the products made from it become long-term partners for their new owners.

We design our products based on the waste material that was created. Even though the Isku fabric packages end up with pieces that are too small for upholstery purposes, they work perfectly as a durable material for our small but meaningful treasures.

Greetings from the Lahti factory

We want to give our partners a chance to have their voices heard, because without them the idea of utilizing waste material would just remain, well, an idea. Here are some greetings from Isku and snippets from the team's everyday life, just as it appears at the factory in Lahti.

"We always strive to find a new life for all our by-products. We want to recycle surplus leather as material and we are pleased to collaborate with Lovia. In the hands of a responsible partner, surplus leather gets a new life in the form of bags."

-Kaisa Vuori, Sustainability Director, Isku

We do a lot of good, but we are not perfect.

Our collaboration with Isku reduces the environmental burden compared to producing bags only from materials made for them. However, there is always room for improvement, especially when it comes to responsibility. In 2022, we will explore the possibility of expanding the utilization of surplus materials to also include cutting waste textiles. We are also testing a collaboration model used in leather recovery for textiles, where Isku's cutting point employees collect cutting waste pieces and full boxes are delivered directly to Lovia's warehouse without the Lovia team having to travel to Lahti separately to investigate available options. This way, we reduce emissions caused by transportation and, of course, our team members' time, which can then be used to focus on, for example, coming up with ideas for the next waste creation.
