The details of the pike perch HILLA bags feature fish leather hand-tanned by Ulla Haverinen, who resides in Kuhmo. Each fish leather is unique – no two scale patterns are exactly alike. Haverinen fishes for her family, and the fish skins are collected to minimize waste.
The burbot leather is tanned by Ossi Kumpulainen in Mikkeli. He sources the fish skins from local fishermen. Both types of fish leather are soft yet extremely durable materials.

To make fish leather a durable material for bags, it must be tanned. The tanning solution is made from tree bark, such as willow, spruce, or alder, mixed with water, salt, pine soap, canola oil, and beeswax. The leather is then dried, and canola oil is rubbed on the surface. The entire process takes about 3–4 weeks before it is ready for use in its new application.
After tanning, the fish leathers travel by road to our designer Outi's desk in Helsinki, where they find new life as details in bags. In addition to fish leather, HILLA bags also use surplus leather from the Finnish furniture industry, which is strong and durable.
